Derek B. Yarmis is a member of the insurance regulation practice group.  Derek’s practice focuses on regulatory litigation on behalf of property and casualty and life and health insurers at the Maryland Insurance Administration and the Office of Administrative Hearings.  He represents insurers in consumer complaint, enforcement and rate hearings, and market conduct examinations, and also provides counseling and advice on a wide variety of regulatory issues, including underwriting, rating, distribution, fraud reporting, unclaimed property, provider reimbursement, and claim settlement practices.

Since entering private practice, Derek has handled life, health, disability, and long-term care insurance coverage litigation before federal and state courts at both the trial and appellate levels.  Derek represents insurers and employee benefit plans in the defense of actions governed by ERISA and also represents insurers, nonprofit health service plans, health maintenance organizations, and managed care organizations in a wide variety of commercial disputes.

At the University of Baltimore, Derek was Manuscript Editor of the University of Baltimore Law Review.  Following graduation, he served for two years as law clerk to the Honorable John J. Bishop, Jr., Associate Judge of the Court of Special Appeals of Maryland.

From August 1994 through February 1996, Derek was a litigation associate with the Baltimore law firm of Shapiro and Olander.  He became associated with Funk & Bolton, P.A. upon its formation on March 1, 1996.

Before entering law school, Derek was an Assistant Regional Administrator for the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems. He is a Life Member of and provides pro bono legal services to The Liberty Road Volunteer Fire Company, Inc., where he previously served as a Firefighter/Paramedic, Emergency Medical Services Lieutenant, and Director.  Derek also serves as a member of the Peer Review Committee of the Attorney Grievance Commission of Maryland.
